From Book-Loving school girl...

I’ve always loved stories, and my dad used to tell the best ones to my brother and me when we were young. They were exciting and dangerous and scary stories. The heroes were always a girl and a boy and they’d have to battle ghosts, zombies, vicious monsters and natural disasters.

I don’t remember any of it ever keeping me awake. Maybe it’s because I thought it was normal and everyone had a bedtime like mine. Maybe it’s because I bottled up real worries about changing schools, friendships and finding my place in the world and it was a release to stop pushing fear away and to embrace it instead.

When I had children of my own, I remembered those stories and the feelings they generated – excited, scared, can’t-wait-to-hear-what-happens-next – and I wanted to see if I could tell stories that created those same feelings.

Inspired by the beautiful coastline around Saltburn-by-the-Sea, coupled with the gothic vibe of Whitby, I got to work.

To a woman on a mission

I want to inspire children to tell stories and to be proud of the things that make them unique. Spooksmiths Investigate is first and foremost a fun, spooky adventure, but it’s also about finding yourself and your friends; about family and expectations; about not giving up even when you are scared – and trying to see the funny side of life even when things are at their worst.
